Earthstop/Sunset Forever - Introduction (By The Genie)
SYNOPSIS:
There's a lightshow in the sky; a fierce illumination which makes way for an impossible event: everything stops. The Earth stops turning around the sun. It stops moving on its own access. The world freezes, impossibly, as Britain is trapped under a perpetual sunset. Teaming up with a nearly-retired professor and a criminal ex-psychologist, the Doctor travels across the universes to reach the heart of the problem, and discovers a dark secret about nature which will change the way he sees evolution forever. |
PREVIEW:
A fizzling puddle of acid was on the floor. Empty bottles and test tubes lay haphazardly on the shelves like one of those Health & Safety ‘Spot the Hazard’ exercises. Graves choked and wafted the smoke away. “Move back!” he choked. “There’s gas, and it looks like I can see-“ His eyes widened and he ran to Cartwright as quickly as he could, pushing him through the other door and fire exit. Graves smashed the alarm on his way out, and the action was heightened by flashing lights and ringing alarms. Their spectacle was outdone by a mighty explosion and the sound of the skylight smashing; both men fell onto the cobbled floor as shrapnel soared over their heads. |
About three or four years ago I started writing a book called Sunset Forever. It was, in consideration, a fairly terrible book during one of my worst phases of writing. But I've always kept the idea in case I could use it again, and now I am. This is, effectively, a direct re-interpretation with the Doctor inserted in the gaps. That became handy in the end, as I needed him for the sake of convenience. Eventually he became more than that, taking charge of the narrative and replacing the role of the original characters. Soon, this two-parter replaced and outdid the novel. Maybe it was always meant to be a Doctor Who story.
The idea is about the Earth stopping still, and if you like it I'd recommend giving The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker a read, because it tackles the idea in much more depth and is probably one of the most ingenious books in the world at the moment. It didn't actually inspire this, though, since I only read it recently. Still, there are some links between the two.
And yes, the Earthstop thing was meant to be like Earthshock. But don't worry, no Adric.
These aren't my best, necessarily, but they were an experiment and will mean something to a still-forming bigger picture.
