"You could have all of time and space at the press of a button, without anyone knowing. Anywhere you want. Anything you could see, any question you want answered, and anyone you’ve ever admired only two words away. Is there really anything to consider when one of your options is that?”
A new year marks a new start for Tommy Lindsay as his life is turned upside down one strange night. A blue box in a magical forest is beckoning, and a woman called Eve holds impossible secrets. There's something funny about that new lecturer, too... “See that man? That was Nobody. Or, as he’s better known, Odysseus – the greatest mythical hero who ever lived.” The Doctor makes his usual impression, taking Tommy to see a place he's studied for years - and considered a myth. The Land of the Cyclopes. Little does the Doctor know, however, that that's only the beginning of a long journey through a land of gods and monsters. A voyage. Or, even, an Odyssey... "I travelled with the two people I trust most in the world. It just happens that I can’t face talking to them.” Arriving on a lighthouse in the deep space, Tommy begins with an unfathomably bleak first peak at the wider universe - but that's not all. Here, light years away from any other life, something is waiting; watching. Something which should never have been guided here. Something ancient, passing in the night... "You showed me there were always consequences. That was right.” Back on Earth, the TARDIS trio each face their own challenges. Tommy, after catching up on what he missed, soon finds himself in a strange, even haunted Bed & Breakfast. Autumn is forced to undertake a horrific task which will stay with her for a long time. And, deadliest of all, the Doctor has a dinner party to go to... "Just stay away from the shops, stay away from the streets." With UNIT's help, the Doctor sets out to fight back the Nestene. But with Tommy trapped and their only other friend dying, this time it's not just the Earth in danger, but the people he cares about. Will they all make it out alive - and where will they go after? "Yes, you’re in a city of conscientious objectors. Technically at least – that was what we were once upon a time. Nowadays, new generations with new ideas.” The Doctor and his team set off on a new adventure - a city, concealed in a dome underneath the sea, protected from a terrible war on the surface. But the city has a secret of its own, a secret so awful its consequences will be felt forever. For one unlucky member of the Doctor's team, this will be their last adventure in the TARDIS... "She just wanted to fit in. She ended up lying dead in a dark passageway on a spaceship a million miles from her home." Broken into two, the TARDIS team separates to undertake two impossible tasks. The first, solving an inexplicable murder in deep space. The second: an ordinary holiday in Barcelona... “Trust me my dear, just take a bite… one bite. And all your wishes, all of your deepest desires, will come true. That I can promise you. Yes, yes, yes.” As the TARDIS arrives in a small village in the past, the Doctor finds himself launched into what seems to be a real-life fairy-tale: castles, monsters, and valiant quests to undertake. And one woman, the harbinger of doom... "And there it is again: the arrogance of a Time Lord. You swan around the universe, Doctor, poking your nose in other people’s business, shaping the world in ways that you see fit. But you never stop. You never think." The Doctor begins to realise the full extent of the trap he has been thrown into, and Autumn is placed in the most difficult situation of her life. For once, the Doctor and his friends will not be able to walk away from the adventure in the same way they'd arrived. In all the truest stories, there is a price to be paid. “One day, men shall look back...” 1888. Wilhelm II is crowned Kaiser of Germany. William Crookes helps discover the electron. Adolf Hitler is conceived. In London, a birth is taking place. A grim midwife stalks the streets, preparing its delivery. Deep in the spirit of the city something dark is stirring, ready to bring with it such hell the world has never known. Only Inspector Abberline has the will to resist, but will he stop the Ripper before his mission is complete? And what terrible secret does he have to tell the Doctor? “If this works, it will give us the answer to everything. All of space and time, anything we never understood everything that shouldn’t have been possible. Our whole understanding of the universe hinges on this, and we won’t be able to forget what we’ve discovered. Even if it makes us give up on everything.” Suffering a terrible blow, the Doctor decides enough is enough, and seeks out to find answers to the oldest questions in the universe. Why? What's it all for? And who actually composed Beethoven's Fifth? A room is about to be entered, and a terrible secret discovered. A window is about to be opened, so that a good man can jump. And a trigger is about to be pulled, with ramifications that will haunt the Doctor for the rest of his life. “Oh my God. I know where I am.” One of them survived. But they're soon going to wish they hadn't. “Suffering is necessary. It’s a kind of… purification.” Waking up in what seems like an ordinary place, the Doctor discovers a world unlike any he has ever encountered. For once in his life, he is completely powerless, with only his thoughts on his side. And at long last, he's about to learn the truth behind the universe... |
The second series of The Eighth Doctor Adventures sees the TARDIS filled up, as the Doctor, now finally able to trust Autumn Rivers, finds himself not just back with Robin Moon, but with new companion Tommy Lindsay, a Classics student from King's College London who finds himself drawn to a damaged TARDIS. But the fun won't last forever, and as the Doctor comes to learn, there are consequences to travelling with him. This time, not all of his friends are going to make it out alive. The second series is produced by Janine Rivers. |
