"Hello everyone! Spot of news! Christmas has a new sheriff!"
Following a signal to a backwater planet, has the Doctor finally found a chance of returning home? “Sontarans. A small group of Sontarans. And, apparently one dressed as Santa...” Trenzalore faces its first attack in the form of a dysfunctional Sontaran clone batch. As villagers begin to fall victim to the new world they've been launched into, Christmas' old Sheriff must come to terms with the fact that a bleak future is approaching. “Did you really believe I would have been happy with your double? I wanted you. The real you.” When Christmas faces an unusual menace, the Doctor begins to question whether this strange new force may have different motives to the rest of the attackers. Is there something else to be won in Christmas? Realising that the Doctor has more to do with the war than he lets on, Archie begins to turn to darker contacts as he decides that he'll go to any lengths to protect his town. “They don’t care about anything else. That’s all they know. Food.” The Doctor faces a challenge to his own abilities - for once, it seems he cannot keep his town safe. Just how do you stop the Vashta Nerada? “Well what else do I do? And if it doesn’t happen now, the Sontarans are going to mow down the Papal Mainframe and kill everyone. And I’m not going to let that happen.” Never judge a book by its prelude. The Sontarans are back, and this time they've got competence on their side. But does that justify retaliation? "Why did I stay on Trenzalore? I don’t need to tell you that. The bigger question is this: why do you want to kill them?” The Doctor is in the enemy's hands. Christmas is under attacked. The only possibility of salvation lies in the hands of the man who sold the Doctor's soul. A good man who must tell a great lie. "Happy Birthday, April. Sixty years on Trenzalore." The Doctor has now spent sixty years on Trenzalore, but the threats are not over. The villagers talk of abominable snowmen stalking the surrounding environment. But... it can't be... can it? "I hope you get uploaded to hell." The Doctor is beginning to notice the effects of ageing on April, and wonders how much longer she will be able to stay with him. The Christmas he knew is disappearing. The voices of his friends are echoes, passing on the wind, and on each picture-frame gathers a layer of dust. And it always ends the same way every time. But he isn't the only one suffering - high up the ranks of the Church of the Papal Mainframe, one devastated woman threatens to break the ceasefire altogether. Can Tasha Lem convince her to stay with the Silence, or is she destined for a darker path? "Then the whole mountain opened up, exploding up into the heavens. But the Doctor, that clever, clever Doctor, had known the ghost's plan all along. He used his power to take over one of the ghost's monsters and he brought the whole mountain down, trapping the creatures down there forever." After losing April, the Doctor is having a hard time on Trenzalore, but this is made a hundred times worse when he faces his most difficult challenge yet - Weeping Angels. Messing with time, the Doctor is trapped in two stories, and begins to understand how long he will really have to spend on this planet. “You send your friends up there a message from the Doctor. You tell them the Doctor stays.” An attack on the Papal Mainframe leads the Doctor into a trap which could end in his destruction. But after generations on Trenzalore, he's finally offered the chance to run away and never look back. Will he take it up? And what would be the price if he did? "But it's no different to my life before. Everyone dies on me in the end." There is no monster, no invasion. No threat. No enemy. Instead, the Doctor is faced with something far, far worse. Madame Kovarian has returned to Trenzalore - and she wants to talk. “My church might be dust by the time you’ve spoken your name, but if that day comes, I won’t be. I’ll be down in that town with a knife and a temper. Clear?” With Barnable at his side and even Madame Kovarian fighting his cause, Christmas has never seemed stronger for the Doctor. That is, until a revenge attack. Until Christmas encounters something it has never even imagined encountering before: a monster motivated by its hatred for the town itself. Running out of troops, and without a plan, the Doctor is forced to take drastic measures. A terrible prophecy is about to be fulfilled, and a promise broken. Eventually, in every war, this happens. |
